It's safe to say that 2020 has been a pretty rubbish year for most of us thanks to a global pandemic which has brought challenges unheard of in a century. Covid-19 has wrecked havoc with people's lives, health, livelihoods and businesses and last weekend's announcement of tighter restrictions has thwarted many families' plans for the festive season. However, that's enough doom and gloom. Right now the world needs cheered up more than ever before and the good news is that, with the turning of the great wheel of the year, there is genuine hope of a new dawn for humanity. Tonight, December 21st, is not just the Winter Solstice and longest night of the year, but will also be marked by an astronomical phenomenon not seen in our skies for 800 years. This ultra-rare conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn will create a bona fide "Christmas Star" in the heavens, with many predicting that the spectacle will herald the dawn of a new age for humanity.
Seldom have we had a greater need for the return of the light. But just as the "Star of Bethlehem" heralded the birth of Christ 2000 years ago, so many astrologers and spiritual leaders believe that tonight's auspicious astrological alignment marks the dawning of the Age of Aquarius and the ushering in of a new awareness for humanity in which we will live our lives from a more spiritual, less materialistic, perspective. Some may think that such a Utopian vision looks less plausible then ever right now, particularly given the increased political and economic turbulence we have witnessed in recent years. A decade of financial crises, combined with uncertainties and squabbling over Brexit and the equally alarming events on the far side of the Atlantic, have led to increased conflict and a society ever more divided.
However, history has shown that such periods of chaos are almost always a necessary precursor to increased stability and lasting change. Creation moves in cycles and it is often necessary for old and outwork structures and institutions to be torn down in order to make way for something new. This destruction of an old way of life can be chaotic and traumatic, but it also represents an opportunity to rebuild afresh. As the archaic systems of our world begin to crumble and fail, this is a time where a new type of human being and a new world is being reborn like a phoenix from the ashes of the old. Tonight's great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn will be the closest observable since 1226 and, if skies are clear, will be visible as an amazingly bright star. This conjunction, also called the Christmas Star because the two planets appear as one, happens every 20 years but this will be the first time it has been close enough to be visible since the year 1226. Since the beginning of recorded history, as told through temples like Stonehenge or the pyramids, humans have gathered in ceremony and celebration to mark the movement of celestial bodies. 2020 is no different except today we have the technology to connect these celebrations from sacred sites across the globe.
